BCCT Board of Directors 2021 [Terms of Reference]

PROFILES:- Office Bearers

As we come to terms with the impact of COVID on the economy and society, the role of the BCCT has never been more important. At one level it is about supporting business through networking, thought leadership and lobbying. At another level it is about recognising the role of business within society, by helping to build community relationships. Here the BCCT can create awareness and promote sustainable solutions in all areas. So much good work is being done by the various BCCT Committees and members in these areas.

It is also important that the BCCT is seen to embrace the whole of Thailand, not just Bangkok. We should do everything we can to welcome more Thais and other nationalities, while also encouraging female business leaders and the next generation of professionals. We need an inclusive Chamber that looks forward even as it continues to learn from history – a Chamber that is highly relevant today for both large and small companies.

In terms of style, I believe the Board of the BCCT has a collective responsibility to lead on behalf of its members. By working as a team and involving others, the workload can be effectively shared, thus empowering the Executive to deliver on multiple fronts.

As for my background, I currently serve as the Chairman of Grant Thornton in Thailand (https://www.grantthornton.co.th/), Deputy Chairman of Mentis (https://mentisglobal.com/) and a Non-Executive Director of Clipper Holdings (https://www.rmagroup.net/). For the past 2 years I have been an Advisor to the BCCT and have spoken at or participated in BCCT events in Bangkok, Pattaya and Phuket. Previously I worked for the OCS Group (known as PCS in Thailand) for 39 years, and as its Global CEO for 19 years, leading its international expansion. Further details are available on my LinkedIn page: www.linkedin.com/in/ccracknell

I am proud to hold the position of General Manager at Lancaster Bangkok hotel, having worked there since September 2016. Prior to relocating here I worked in London as a General Manager for the same owning company, having worked as a General Manager in London for over ten Years for both the Intercontinental Hotel Group and Whitbread Hotels.

Having spent most of my career in England, It was always an ambition to work in Thailand. I moved to Bangkok with my two children, and my wife who works as a teacher at an international school. My commitment to the BCCT members is that I will be an active and energetic board member, representing their interests wherever possible; Hotels are the biggest member segment of BCCT, and through my GM network I have been able to help the chamber secure great venues for our T3 networking events. My plan for 2020 is to continue to arrange events for General Managers and open them up to BCCT members with an interest in travel and tourism, work with the Foreign Chambers Alliance, and support the BCCT events committee in making British Chamber events the best in Thailand.

Kieran is passionate about making the BCCT as open and inclusive as possible, and has worked hard to encourage younger Chamber members to get involved by creating opportunities for them to network, make connections, and be inspired about how to progress their careers.

Kieran co-founded and Chairs the BCCT Young Professionals (YP), where he has organised 18 events, welcomed over 2,000 attendees (58% Thai, ~ 50% women, 37% non-members) and secured 27 different sponsorships over the last three years. These events promote networking, career development, and topical discussions in focused areas like branding, employee rights, health and wellbeing and resume writing. He has also established an annual fundraising event for charities of disadvantaged children and cancer support, which has raised 100,000 THB in the last two years.

Kieran strongly believes that further engagement with younger BCCT members is critical for the growth of the Chamber, and by actively promoting its benefits, we can imbue the future leaders of both BCCT member and non-members companies alike with the immense value, purpose, and sense of community that the Chamber continues to invoke.

After graduating from Leeds University, Kieran moved to Asia and took up a position at the BCCT to research existing and potential future trade relationships between Thailand and the UK, and his work has since played a fundamental role in the British Embassy’s mission to strengthen its relationship with Thailand in a post-Brexit world.

Since Jan 2018, Kieran has been working for PKF as Asia Pacific Senior Regional Co- Ordinator and supports over 140 offices in 80 countries with 14,000 staff and a combined turnover of more than USD900m.

I have been a member of the Board since 2010 and have served as both Vice Chairman and Chairman.

I believe firmly that BCCT is an organisation for members and needs to continue and develop its services for members. It seems to be obvious that an organisation for members, should be serving the needs of its members but there are times when the BCCT could be doing a lot more and a lot better.

Most BCCT members are SMEs and their needs are fundamental to the core of what the BCCT should be doing and we need to work to further develop those services. The membership fee is what members pay to access our services and forms the foundation of the finances of the Chamber.

My particular interest and background is in Education – I was a Headteacher in the UK for 20 years – and in that respect there is a lot that we can do. Skills based education is crucial to Thailand’s continuing economic development and the BCCT has assisted large companies such as Pearson (known here for their BTEC qualifications) and City and Guilds (C&G) to gain traction in Thailand.

There are many other aspects of educational development that we can assist with and support. Education is the bedrock of any developing nation – not just for those wealthy enough to access private provision. Our members need access to a well-educated and qualified workforce.

No organisation can afford to stand still and the BCCT is no exception to this. Listening to, and acting upon, our members’ thoughts and comments is essential if we are to stay as a leading Chamber of Commerce in Thailand. As your Chamber you are entitled to that.
